Changing urban environments - Cardiff

During our last lesson we described the population changes that have occured in Cardiff between 1981 and 2001. In this lesson we shall use the Cardiff council census maps to explore and offer explanations for the spatial patterns of the population of Cardiff using different socio-economic indicators.

1. Follow the 'easy' steps to get to the thematic ward maps of Cardiff.

2. Create choropleth maps that illustrate spatial patterns of deprivation and segregation. Use the following indicators:

a. Demographic (age, stage of life)
b. Economic (wealth, housing tenure, unemployment)
c. Social (single parent households, qualifications)
d. Cultural (ethnic origin, knowledge of Welsh)

3. Copy and paste these maps into Word or Publisher.

4. Describe the general pattern of segregation and deprivation in Cardiff.

5. To what extent does population movement in Cardiff (as described last lesson) explain the present day pattern of deprivation and segregation in Cardiff.
