This was the approach of a band of heavy rain, one of many that spoilt Bank Holiday plans. The weather is just one part of geography but it can influence lives in many ways. This could just be a soaking whilst sat on the beach, or it could be a powerful hurricane that kills thousands of people (such as hurricane Mitch in 1998).
We can start to understand the weather if we look at satellite images and weather maps (synoptic charts) from around the time of the storm (11.30am - 2/5/05):
We can use these images to help us to describe, explain and predict the weather, to avoid a wet beach picnic or even prevent the loss of thousands of lives. Learn how to predict the weather here.
