glaciation 2

Glaciation is the study of the impact of glaciers on the landscape. Much of our landscape owes its very existance to the action of glaciers during the last ice age that ended around 20, 000 years ago. For example the land on which the Bridgend industrial estate was built on was once a glacial lake ('Ribbon lake'). Much of the landscape of the Valleys was created but giant glaciers carving their way through the land. This image shows the landscape near Treorchy in the Rhondda valley. This was created by glaciation.

At Pencoed we study the impact of glaciation at GCSE level. Pupils study how theglacial features in our area were formed and how they are still being created in places such as the Alps (where Rhian took these images).
